The Junior Celts were started in 2010.
Our first year we lost every match. In 2011 we ended up 5th in the state. In the Spring of 2012, the Jr. Celts got 2nd in the state with their only loss being in the Championship match against Pritzger College Preparatory School out of Chicago. The team has came a long way from that first year when we had about 22 boys who had never even seen a rugby ball. Now every year we have returning players. Making practices and teaching the game to new players much easier & effective. We also now have a large group of graduated high school rugby players who are playing on our men's rugby club and some are attending LLCC. Some have gone on to other colleges & universities and are carrying their rugby careers to higher levels.
The ultimate goal for our high school program is more teams.
The Illinois Youth Rugby Association (IYRA) wants Springfield to be a major powerhouse for down state youth rugby. Building up multiple Springfield area teams that compete not only amongst themselves but with the other southern tier teams in Peoria, Bloomington, Metamora, Morton, Chillicothe and up into the Chicago Area teams. From there we are wanting to develop an "Elite Select Side" team from all of our teams that will compete at higher levels, travel the US and compete overseas on touring sides.
High school rugby is a "Spring Only Sport" so it does not conflict with high school football or soccer.
The Junior Celts are not affiliated with any school or the IHSA. We are a club sport playing at the high school age level and are sanctioned by USA Rugby. We are always looking for new players and no prior rugby experience is required. This is a "Springfield Area" team so you don't have to be from Springfield. You just have to be in high school. Past teams have included boys from Lanphier, Southeast, Springfield High, Chatham, SHG, Calvary, New Berlin, Pleasant Plains, Athens & North Mac.
